10 Things To Consider Before Undergoing Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is a choice, or perhaps a hope – a hope that you can make positive changes in your physical appearance and in your life. Since its conception, cosmetic surgery has drawn in a large scope of people. For some, these physical enhancements have brought about dramatic life changes. For others, the results are more subtle – a boosted self-esteem, an increase in self-confidence, or a more positive outlook on life. And this ever-expanding process has made aesthetic enhancement available to both men and women who are looking for positive life changes.

Although there are many benefits to cosmetic surgery, there are certain things you should consider before undergoing these procedures, especially since these decisions will, in most cases, have life-long effects. So, to help you in your decision making and/or preparations, here are some questions and topics you should consider before undergoing any cosmetic surgery.

1. Your intention and reason

Intention is often bypassed in the process of determining whether or not you are a candidate for cosmetic surgery. It is important to ask yourself why you want the surgery. Is it for a job (modeling/acting)? Is it to correct problems caused by an accident, injury or birth defect? Do you just want to feel better about yourself? No matter what the driving force may be, this decision should be made for yourself and for your benefit, not by or for other people.

2. Your Finances

Are you prepared for the expenses of cosmetic surgery? Finances can be one of the more difficult obstacles for many people considering undergoing some type of cosmetic procedure. When considering costs and affordability, be sure to include costs for recovery time. For some people recovery may be fairly quick and easy, but for others, depending on the procedure being done and other personal factors, recovery may take longer and may incur more expenses (i.e. medical supplies, missed work, check-ups, etc.). So think realistically and plan ahead; be sure to consider all possible expenses when determining affordability.

3. Talk about it

Although some people choose to keep these procedures as private and quiet as possible, you might want to at least consider talking to someone about your plans. Having the support of your spouse, family members, or friends may help ward off some unnecessary anxiety, since those closest to you will know what to expect in the end. Most people find it comforting when someone agrees with their decision; so consider talking to a few of your closest friends or relatives prior to your procedure.

4. Your body

Providing your doctor with your complete medical history is a must. Serious, even life-threatening, complications can arise if your doctor is not well-informed of any and all previous or existing medical conditions, as well as an overall picture of your health. A pre-surgery medical examination is always a good idea, just to be sure you are healthy enough to handle the type of surgery you are considering. So, talk to your doctor, and be very honest about your health and habits.

5. Expectations

Risk should always be a factor when it comes to considering cosmetic surgery. Not only are there medical risks, as with any surgical procedure, but there is the risk that the results may not always meet your highest expectations. Results can vary from client to client; so you should be realistic about the results you expect to see. Ask your doctor specific questions about what type of results he or she anticipates, especially if this is your first procedure.

6. Know the costs of your procedure

Most health insurance companies do not cover costs for cosmetic surgeries and enhancements. The costs of cosmetic procedures can vary, depending on the type of work being performed. Typically, costs can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, especially when factoring in recovery time and costs. So before you make any decisions, be sure you know what you’re getting into.

7. Choosing a surgeon

Picking a surgeon is an important part of the decision-making and planning process for cosmetic procedures. When picking a surgeon, be sure to look for someone who is certified by the Board of Plastic Surgery, recognized by the Medical Association. You can also ask for references and other background information before making your decision. Make sure you feel comfortable and confident with your surgeon before moving forward with the procedure.

8. Getting ready (pre-op)

There are certain procedures you must follow to prepare for surgery. Some procedures and preparations must be done several days in advance. Your surgeon can provide you with details of what to do and what to avoid prior to your procedure. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully so as to avoid unnecessary and potentially dangerous complications.

9. Be ready for the critics

Not everyone will appreciate your decision to change your physical appearance. Some may accept your changes, and others may not. It is important to prepare yourself for these mixed reactions, especially since sometimes they come from those closest to you. However, the most important thing is for you to be comfortable and confident in your new looks.

10. No guarantees

The results of cosmetic surgery might not be exactly what you were hoping for or expecting. Sometimes the results will not last indefinitely, especially depending on your personal health and habits, as well as the components being used in your body. Some patients undergo multiple surgeries in trying to achieve their desired results. Your ability to do this may depend on cost, time, and even the surgeon performing your procedures and what he or she recommends.

While cosmetic enhancements can provide some very positive life changes, considering these issues can be vital to your health, your results and your personal well-being. So before making this commitment, be sure to do your homework. Know your options, know what to expect, and most importantly, know yourself. This is an important step toward becoming who you are on the inside; so make sure you are well-informed and prepared before undergoing any cosmetic surgery.
