Breast Augmentation for Older Women
Do you think of yourself as an “older woman”? Didn’t think so. But even if you deny it, sometimes your body doesn’t play along, especially your breasts. If this is true for you, you may be wondering whether a breast lift or a breast augmentation is the best solution to help you look as young as you feel.
Breast Lift
A breast lift is primarily designed to address sagginess of the breasts. In a breast lift, an incision is made, generally around the areola and down to the breast crease (known as the inframammary crease). Skin is removed. The breast material is reshaped, and the skin is sutured to hold the new breast mound in its more perky and youthful shape.
The advantages of this procedure are that there is no implant and it does give you breasts that are perkier and more youthful in appearance.
The disadvantages of this procedure are that it leaves a significant scar and your breasts are the same size or smaller than they were before the procedure. The typical breast lift scar circles the areola and descends to the inframammary crease. Sometimes, reshaping your breasts to make them firmer will require making them smaller.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation uses breast implants to add volume to your breasts. Sometimes, this is sufficient to address your breast sagginess, along with the additional support provided by the implants themselves. This can also give you the breast size you want, whether it is the breast size you used to have or if it means the bigger breasts that you always wanted.
The advantages of this procedure are that it results in less scarring and can maintain or enlarge your breasts. The disadvantages are that it can only address limited sagginess, and that the implant may require a second or third surgery.
Combining Procedures
Sometimes to get the amount of lift you need and the breast size you desire, you may need a breast lift with breast implants. To some extent, this is the worst of both worlds, since it scars like a breast lift, but like normal breast augmentation you may need one or more additional surgeries. Still, it may be the only solution that can give you the appearance of your breasts that you desire.
There is no upper age limit for breast enhancement procedures, as long as you are healthy enough for surgery. To learn more about breast augmentation for women of all ages, please visit the website of The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery today.
