Cosmetic Surgery – Can You be Too Young

For many the teenage years can be traumatising to say the least and, in a day and age when image is everything, some teens are turning to cosmetic surgery in the hope that they will be able to get back their sense of self esteem.

For some the nose can be the area that stands out, being perceived as too big, or inversely, too small. Some may feel that their nose is crooked or hooked, whatever the reason though cosmetic surgery is presenting itself as an option

Many thousands of teenagers are turning to cosmetic surgery each and every year, the majority of them female, the most popular ops being nose surgery, breast augmentation, liposuction and even ear reshaping.

Teenagers face tremendous pressure to look good by being bombarded with images of perfect celebrities in the magazines they read and on the TV programs and films they watch.

Of course as we grow older we grow less inclined to worry about our appearance in such superficial aspects, this doesn’t mean we don’t worry about aging though and this is one of the main reasons people opt for cosmetic surgery.

The worrying thing is that our bodies and skeletal structure may not be fully developed until we are between 14-16 and for some a little older. Also in some women the breasts may still be developing at the age 16-18. The majority of ethical surgeons and practices will perform a consultation and address this issue and also look for any psychological condition such as body dysmorphic disorder. They will also usually explain the procedure and the effect this physical change can have on a person to ensure that the patient is fully aware of the outcome.

Many surgeons argue that at this young age these surgical solutions can help to improve self esteem and improve the quality of a person’s life. It is worth remembering that changing something about your appearance may make you feel a little more positive about yourself but may not be the life changing experience you are expecting it to be. Therefore you should always enter into any cosmetic surgery procedure having carefully examined all of the facts for some time. If you are lucky enough to find a very ethical and honest surgeon the consultation process should fully equip you with enough details to make an informed decision and the surgeon may even turn you away if they don’t think your reasons for undergoing surgery are justifiable.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK such as nose surgery you should seek an accredited surgeon who is registered with BAPRAS or BAAPS to ensure this plastic surgery runs smoothly.
