Fat Transfers: How Are They Done?
If you feel that you have too much fat in some areas and not enough in others, a fat transfer is a way of correcting that. During these recent years of liposuction popularity, surgical techniques and instruments have been improved so that now it is easy and safe to remove fat from the body.
You can have a fat transfer to improve you appearance in many ways:
- Smoothing and filling out the backs of the hands, when aging has made the veins look too prominent
- Plumping up the lips to give them a fuller and more youthful shape
- Filling in facial areas such as the hollowed areas beneath the eyes and the forehead creases
- Augmenting the cheeks to create a more defined facial profile
- Reshaping and augmenting the buttocks.
It is not only to correct the sagging caused by aging that people have a fat transfer. Many young people have been having a fat transfer for the buttocks, to give them a more attractive shape and more perky look.
This can also be done using a butt implant. If you are a very petite and thin person with no excess fat stores, butt implants would be the best way to go. But if you have any areas of fatty tissue that you would like to reduce, a fat transfer is an ideal two-for-one procedure.
The Brazilian Butt Lift
A Brazilian Butt Lift is more than just a buttocks augmentation. It is a reshaping procedure that will give you a new body profile. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Joseph F. Serota offers fat transfer procedures, including the Brazilian Butt Lift, to his Denver, Colorado clients and has many happy patient-graduates.
A Brazilian Butt Lift uses liposuction first, to remove fatty tissue that is later used for buttocks augmentation. You can have that fat removed from the abdomen, thighs, or hips, where you may feel that you have too much. It is removed through a thin tube called a cannula, using suction.
By reducing the fat content of those areas, your cosmetic surgeon is not only harvesting fat for later use, but also preparing the lower body for the new buttocks contour. With less bulk in those areas near the buttocks, the enhanced buttocks will stand out more and look more shapely and saucy.
The fatty tissue is processed to remove unwanted cells such as connective tissue or blood cells. This purifies it and raises its quality for a fat transfer. Then it is carefully injected into the buttocks using extremely thin needles. An experienced cosmetic surgeon will make many micro-injections at various depth levels in order to create a final contour that is smooth and even.
Recovering From a Fat Transfer
Since a fat transfer is done using either general anesthesia or “twilight sedation”, you will be drowsy for a while afterwards and will need a ride home. You can resume normal activities fairly soon as long as you follow your cosmetic surgeon’s post-op instructions to the letter.
There will be some short-term bruising and swelling. To reduce any discomfort you can use an over-the-counter painkiller, or your cosmetic surgeon may give you a pain med prescription.
The risk of complications is low with fat transfers, largely because this is your own tissue that is injected. It is not a foreign substance like an implant or an artificial dermal filler. The body will not reject it or have any allergic reaction. There are also no large incisions required for a fat transfer, as the fat is removed with a narrow cannula and injected with a very small needle.
