Liposuction vs. Abdominoplasty

Cosmetic surgery has progressed rapidly over the last couple decades, offering several effective options for contouring one’s body. The purposes of two popular procedures, liposuction and abdominoplasty, are occasionally misunderstood, or thought to be the same. They are actually entirely different procedures, and can be administered in one session to accomplish a far better result.

Liposuction

Liposuction involves breaking up the excess fat in specific areas of the body, and suctioning it out–literally removing it. The technique is used to eliminate stubborn fat from hips, thighs, abdomen, the back, neck arms, calves and ankles. It is not a weight reduction procedure, but merely removes localized fat.

A similar procedure is liposculpting. This is a more refined method of fat removal that allows the cosmetic surgeon to remove fat in a more precise manner. This technique is more like sculpting, and closely shaping those same body areas to the contour of the underlying muscles.

Several liposuction techniques offer multiple options for obtaining the best results.

• Tumescent Technique: reduced bleeding and consequently, less bruising and faster healing.
• Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction: ultrasound liquefies the fat prior to sucking it out.
• Power Assisted Liposuction: the power source assists the cannula in breaking up the fat prior to suctioning.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin. This is skin that is loose or sagging as a result of being stretched by obesity or pregnancy. When a person loses weight, or after delivering the baby, stretched skin doesn’t always shrink back to its original size and shape. It can remain as ripples, love handles or large and sagging folds.

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck as it is commonly called, is the procedure of removing the excess skin, while leaving nearly invisible incision scars.

Many patients opt for having both a liposuction and abdominoplasty procedure. After the liposuction, the abdominoplasty could be more effective than if done alone. By removing the stubborn pockets of fat, the additional loose skin can be removed during the abdominoplasty surgery to produce a more complete contouring.
