All About Facial Plastic Surgery

Facial plastic surgery is rarely an “afterthought” procedure. Because faces are always front and center, most people feel that there is less room for compromise or mistakes when it comes to cosmetic surgery on the face. The ravages of poorly done or excessive facial plastic surgery are well known because in many cases these procedures were done on famous people who could theoretically afford the best surgeons in the world. People are less willing to take chances when it comes to facial plastic surgery than with other types.

That is one reason for the overwhelming popularity of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures like Botox injection and the use of facial line fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, and collagen. Botox and line fillers are not permanent, so any mistakes – while unfortunate – are generally gone by six months later. Some creative cosmetic surgeons are finding new and unusual uses for these minimally invasive techniques. For example, fillers can be used for the “lunch hour nose job,” in which the appearance of the nose is straightened, and Botox is used to relax overly wide nostrils and even to soften the jawline of people who feel that their jaw is too squared-off.

But as wonderful as these procedures are, they can’t do much if anything about some of the effects of time on the face. Sagging skin is the main problem that minimally invasive procedures can’t touch. There are, however, promising studies being done of certain wavelengths of light that are believed to penetrate the skin and stimulate the production of collagen, helping the skin stay stronger, and causing some minor tightening of loose skin.

There are still thousands of people who have facelifts every year. Some have the lift only done on the lower part of the face, which also takes in the upper part of the neck, and other people have a full face lift, that involves the entire face. Still others will go for a forehead lift or brow lift alone to alleviate an “angry” look that sets in on some faces as people age. Less drastic face lift procedures are being developed that should cut down on the pain and time investment of recovery. Mini face lifts often require no more than three or four days of down time before the patient can return (with some restrictions) to their normal routine.

Facial plastic surgery goes from barely invasive at all to the major procedure that is a full face lift. This is good news, because it means that people who want to improve the looks of their faces have more choices than ever before as to how to go about it.
