Question by Swimmer: Why is there no taboo for cosmetic dental work, but there’s a taboo for liposuction?
Many people get braces and cosmetic dental surgery for no reason other than cosmetic. I understand there are cases in which dental surgery is needed because the patient is in pain or because of an oral infection, but a lot of these procedures are purely cosmetic. And nobody has a problem with this.

I’m 29 years old, I’ve been a swimmer all of my life, but my ab muscles just don’t show the way they used to, I’m starting to grow love handles and a bit of a turkey neck. I’m still thin, my abs are still hard, but because I’m getting older, I’m growing a layer of fat around my stomach and neck that exercise and dieting is not going to ger rid of, that layer of fat is keeping my abs from showing. I’m also growing a turkey neck despite me being thing, it must be the age. I want to get liposuction around my waist and neck, but people are telling me I’m being too vain.

People never call someone who’s getting his teeth fixed just so they look better vain, so why do people call me vain for getting liposucction for my neck and stomach?

Best answer:

Answer by minnie
1. Braces are not purely a cosmetic dental procedure.
2. Cosmetic dentistry is not taboo because you can’t exercise your way to better teeth…Some people are born with less than perfect teeth or have certain lifestyles that lessen the appeal of their teeth, so it’s not considered a very bad thing.
3. A lot of people have the misconception that lazy people get liposuction, and that they should change their eating habbits and exercise..so that’s why a lot of people think its taboo.

I don’t understand why a 29 year old cares soooo much about other people’s opinions. I do understand that its difficult to ignore strong opinions, but if you really want something (within reason) but are not doing it because people are telling you not to, you need to really evaluate yourself and increase your self esteem.

Also, I think you shouldn’t underestimate working out, some people can be thin (at any age) and get love handles and stuff because their not working out as much as their putting in.

I think before you commit to surgery, you should first do thorough research on what the names of the procedures you might be looking to get. Then find information about those procedures and the risks involved. Get a consult and ask questions; just remember that every time you go under the knife, there are certain risks your putting your life into, and not to scare you, but there are possibilities of death or serious injury. Also, ask about healing times, and post operational experiences.

What do you think? Answer below!
