Why is it so popular to whiten your teeth?

Everywhere we look now we see people with bright smiles bright, teeth. We seldom anyone with yellow teeth, discolored on TV anymore. Some of the actors have smiles so white and bright that it is false and you know they had their teeth whitened.

The popular sitcom Friends even did a parody on teeth whitening where one of the characters as white teeth after treatment that glowed in the dark as if they were irradiated. So what really is teeth whitening, how much, why is so popular, and what kind of results can you expect?

Basically, teeth whitening is a controlled oxygen bleaching tooth enamel. Like any good dentist will tell you that it works better in some than in others and the whole world is not a good candidate (something like the laser eye surgery). No work on any dentures and porcelain veneers, implants, ceramic, etc. It only works on real teeth. The main ingredient is carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide hydrogen, which are oxidizing and bleaching dental enamel.

On the counter equipment and products generally have a low percentage of oxidant ingredient (usually in the range of 2-6%). This is minimally effective at best. Dentists and oral surgeons use a solution of 30-35% and will add to this power and highest blue or white light or laser plasma to increase hyper activity oxidizing treatment.

The difference is that over the counter kits and products can, after many treatments, whiten your teeth 1-2 shades while in office treatments such as Zoom (one of the most popular name brands Professional teeth whitening at present) is in a hour or so whiten teeth 8-14 shades. This is a huge difference, but there is a high price accompanying this in the office bleaching (usually $ 400 to $ 500 and most insurance companies do not cover this treatment.)

Also, another thing to keep in mind is that many dentists are using the bleaching to attract customers in unnecessary and expensive treatments above and beyond the bleachers. Many people are discovering that when they make the appointment for the dentist whitening told they need their remaining wisdom teeth removed, cavities treated even when there are none, and many other non-routine requirements such as deep cleaning that requires anesthesia for someone who has no tooth decay or gum disease.

Many people have found that each dentist you see in some areas such as Chicago, IL and Charlotte, North Carolina gives them a different story and different requirements.
